Shubham Goel entered The Circle calling himself a “Social Medusa.” Since then, he’s become an IRL influencer, but that hasn’t changed his personality.
Shubham Goel, who came in second place on Netflix’s The Circle season 1, was a fascinating player for the fans to watch. The show itself, which originally aired in January 2020, has found an almost creepy appeal in the way how it mimics the intense quarantined days of the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, this is a show about strangers living alone in separate apartments, being completely isolated, and only communicating through a social media platform. The series became a huge hit almost overnight, giving the social experiment side of the show an even bigger impact. In fact, it was the social experiment element that compelled Shubham “Shooby” Goel to enter The Circle in the first place.

The Indian-American ULCA grad in his early 20s entered the cast of The Circle season 1 calling himself a “Social Medusa.” Referring to social media as the Bubonic Plague of our time, Shubham cited the many studies that prove the negative impact engaging in social media has on mental health, and launched a campaign with the Governor of California to ban social media for children under the age of 18. So, when the opportunity arose to test his theories about social media, he couldn’t resist temptation.
As one might expect, Shubham was ranked last in the rankings amongst The Circle players on night one. But, in a fascinating twist, Shubham stayed true to himself and to his word and made very real bonds with some key players such as Seaburn Williams, Sammie Cimarelli, and eventual winner Joey Sasso. These days, Shubham is still very close to his The Circle family. The whole crew has a group chat on Instagram. And yes, Shubham is on Instagram and admits opening the app in the hopes of seeing all the little red notifications popping up. Shubham is the closest to his BFF Joey Sasso. Though the pandemic crushed their plans for 2020 – both were living in LA and planned on making several appearances together – they’re still as close as they’ve ever been.
Ironically, Shubham is now one of the most followed cast members from The Circle season 1. That is because Shubham’s real, authentic personality was visceral on the show. He quickly became a fan favorite and very nearly won the whole show. In an interview with Time, Shubham said of coming in second place, “At the end, I was like, I could win this – I just have to tank Joey. And I just couldn’t do it. I’m glad he won.” He was true to his friendships until the end. Because of COVID-19, Shubham moved back to the Bay Area and continued working on his Master’s in software engineering. But while he co-founded a software engineering company, Shubham isn’t ruling out future work in TV or film. He’s taking classes on sketch comedy and improvisation on the side.
Ultimately, Shubham says he wouldn’t change a thing about his time on The Circle. It revolutionized his life and thinks everyone should pay attention and watch the show as an educational project that raises some good questions about the culture surrounding social media.
