NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Following the deadly Bronx fire, a group of local officials proposed new federal regulations Friday.
The package of regulations will address what they say call the root causes of the fire: Space heaters, self-closing doors and compliance with fire codes.
Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres is expected to introduce the package to Congress.
“New York City’s worst fires in the past 30 years have all been in the Bronx, and that is not an accident,” he said Friday. “That is a consequence of a chronically neglected and underfunded housing stock here in the Bronx.”
The regulations include standards for the production of space heaters requiring automatic shutoffs, for every federally funded housing development to have self-closing doors, which landlords would have to periodically inspect.
They’re also looking to establish real-time monitoring of heating conditions in buildings.
Funeral services will be held Sunday for 15 of the 17 victims who died in the blaze. Two others have already been laid to rest.
