Wired magazine delved into property records and interviews with contractors, unveiling Koolau Ranch as one of the most exorbitant personal construction undertakings in recent history. Situated on Kauai, the compound, still in progress, will feature over a dozen structures, including two primary mansions connected by an underground tunnel.

The tunnel leads to a 5,000-square-foot subterranean refuge with an escape hatch accessible by ladder, as per building plans cited by Wired. This shelter, equipped with living quarters and a mechanical room, boasts a “blast-resistant” concrete and steel door for protection.

Moreover, the compound will house at least 30 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, guest houses, and a cluster of 11 interconnected “disk-shaped” treehouses linked by rope bridges. Security measures include keypad locks, soundproofing, secret doors, and an extensive network of surveillance cameras.

Beyond its luxurious amenities, Koolau Ranch is positioned not only as a retreat for Zuckerberg and his family but also as a potential survival base in the event of a global catastrophe. Wired reports that the builders aim to make the compound entirely self-reliant, featuring a massive water tank and pump system, complemented by existing ranching and agriculture activities spanning 1,400 acres.

Zuckerberg’s secrecy surrounding the project is evident in the construction of a 6-foot wall around the compound and the enforcement of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for all workers. The Facebook founder reportedly invested $170 million to acquire the land, considering it his family’s home.
