VinFast Unveils Plans to Introduce Compact VF3 SUV in the U.S. and Explores Entry into Pickup Segment

The Vietnamese automaker is encountering initial challenges in the American market. The debut of the all-electric VinFast VF3 SUV last year received a lukewarm reception from U.S. media, although Canadian reviews and sales have fared better. Despite the rocky start, VinFast has grabbed attention by revealing plans for its compact electric VF3 SUV to enter the U.S. market.

This move positions the VF3 as potentially the smallest and most affordable new electric car in the American market. VinFast also showcased a concept electric pickup truck named “Wild” at CES 2024, hinting at potential future offerings for the U.S. market.

The “Wild” pickup, measuring 209 inches in length and 79 inches in width, aligns with the popular midsize truck segment in the U.S. It features a standard 5-foot bed length, extendable to 8 feet using a folding midgate and collapsing second-row seats. The design draws inspiration from the Ram REV concept truck, with unique features such as a leather-wrapped interior, a distinctive two-prong steering wheel, bed steps, and a roof taillight.

VinFast has not officially confirmed the production of the Wild concept truck but suggests it could serve as inspiration for future U.S. models. Additionally, VinFast plans to open reservations later in 2024 for the VF3 compact SUV, which initially targeted the Vietnamese market. The VF3, with a length of 125.6 inches, offers a compact design resembling an all-electric Suzuki Jimny SUV. It features two doors, two rows of seating, and a 10-inch infotainment screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In Vietnam, the VF3 comes with a single motor configuration, offering two trims: Eco and Plus, with an estimated starting price of $20,000. The U.S. launch is anticipated following reservations.

Despite initial challenges, VinFast aims for an active 2024 with planned launches of the VF6, VF7, and VF9 SUVs in the U.S. The VF6, a compact SUV, is currently available in Vietnam and features a front-wheel-drive configuration with a single e-motor, offering up to 248 miles of range. The larger VF7, a Niro competitor, boasts a 75.3 kWh battery pack and up to 348 hp, targeting the compact SUV segment. The VF9, a three-row, seven-seater SUV, is available for online orders in the U.S., with a starting MSRP of $79,800, offering a 123 kWh battery and 291 to 330 miles of range. The success of these launches will play a crucial role in VinFast’s trajectory in the competitive American automotive market.
