The film begins with Chisholm, a schoolteacher from Brooklyn, New York, joining Congress. However, she soon decides to broaden her platform by announcing her candidacy for president. Chisholm faced intense scrutiny as both a woman and a Black Congresswoman, but she understood the significance of her decision, stating, “I have an opportunity to make a difference.”

“Shirley” depicts the challenges her campaign encounters within the complexities of American politics. There is a sense that Chisholm is not taken seriously enough, both by the public and at times within her own team. As the toll of running for president takes its toll, it strains her relationship with her husband, Conrad.

Writer-director Ridley understands the importance of Chisholm’s groundbreaking presidential campaign in 1972, and much of the film focuses on this pivotal moment in history. The biopic also explores Chisholm’s personal life, highlighting her strong personality.

While King delivers a purposeful and fiery performance, dominating the screen, the rest of the ensemble cast struggles to establish themselves in their roles. Despite this, “Shirley” pays homage to Chisholm’s place in US politics and serves as an important reminder of her legacy.

The film emphasizes Chisholm’s message of returning politics to the people and underscores the importance of voting, particularly among the youth. As the global superpower faces another election year, “Shirley” becomes a vital narrative, showcasing how barriers can be overcome. The end credits provide an inspiring update on the lives Chisholm impacted.
