“Angel Reese’s Resilience: A Tale of Adversity and Leadership on the Court”
LSU forward Angel Reese faced adversity head-on when she reinjured her right ankle during a 94-87 loss to Iowa on Monday night. Despite the setback, Reese refused to let it serve as an excuse for her performance.

The incident occurred when Reese fell into cameras along the baseline after blocking a shot in the second quarter. Although visibly hobbled, she displayed remarkable resilience by hopping on one foot to the bench. After a brief stint on the bike, she returned to the game, determined to play through the pain.
“I’m tough, so I tried to play through it, of course, and this is something that has been going on for a little while now,” Reese explained. “But I played through it, and I’m not going to make that excuse for the rest of my play for the game.”
This wasn’t Reese’s first encounter with this injury, as she had initially sprained her ankle last month during the SEC tournament. Despite the discomfort, she remained instrumental in LSU’s performance, contributing 10 points before the reinjury. However, her effectiveness waned afterward, as she struggled to maintain her usual level of play.
In addition to her physical struggles, Reese’s leadership shone through in the face of adversity. Her determination to push through the pain resonated with her teammates, who admired her unwavering commitment to the game.
“I saw her limping, but that goes to show the type of person she is,” remarked LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson. “She’s not going to make excuses. She’s just going to take that on the chin. I respect that. That shows how much she cares about the game and her integrity to the game.”
Unfortunately, Reese’s injury coincided with a downturn in LSU’s performance, particularly in their shooting efficiency after the first quarter. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to contain Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, who dominated the court with a remarkable 41-point performance.
Following the game, Reese remained tight-lipped about her future plans, choosing instead to focus on the team’s journey and her impact on the game. Her teammates rallied around her, praising her leadership and resilience in the face of adversity.
Regardless of the outcome, LSU’s journey this season serves as a testament to their resilience and determination. As they look ahead, they have the opportunity to build upon their experiences and return stronger next season.
“Only one team finishes the season happy, and boy, we got to do that last year,” reflected LSU coach Kim Mulkey. “Somebody will get to do it this year. But everybody else is going to come up here and be sad. You know, there’s nothing wrong with being sad. If you’re not sad, that means you didn’t invest much. So those tears are tears of investment.”
