Despite these issues, Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin suggests that Ham is likely to retain his position as head coach for the 2024–25 season, even amidst the ongoing playoff series against the Nuggets.
Irwin shared, “I’ve been asking around, and the vast majority of people I’ve spoken to think Darvin Ham will be back next year, even if the Lakers lose in the first round.”
Despite the potential for Ham’s return, questions linger about his ability to win over his critics. Throughout the regular season, he has been criticized for employing unnecessary defensive strategies and struggling to identify the team’s optimal lineup. Furthermore, there are concerns about his favoritism towards certain players over others. While Ham led the Lakers to a conference final last season, the team’s performance this season has left much to be desired, with a noticeable lack of confidence and a marginal qualification for the playoffs.
