“Dirty Dancing Resort: An Unforgettable Escape Blending Hollywood Magic and Outdoor Adventures

Upon arriving Dirty Dancing Resort at Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia, one quickly realizes that the resort, despite its name, lacks a lake. Instead,e it boasts a diverse array of activities and attractions spread across its 2,600-acre expanse. However, the not-so-secret allure of the lodge lies in its connection to the popular 1987 film “Dirty Dancing,” much of which was filmed on the property.

Capitalizing on the movie’s cult following, Mountain Lake Lodge hosts special weekends dedicated to the film. During our recent stay, my wife, Fyllis, and I immersed ourselves in the movie’s mystique while exploring other offerings on the expansive resort.

With a rich history dating back to the early 1800s, the lodge showcases a blend of old and new. The sprawling lodge, constructed in 1936, stands as a testament to the past, using native stones from the surrounding hills. The resort, now owned by a foundation, preserves its connection to nature while providing a range of modern amenities.

Historic photographs and memorabilia adorn the hallways, and refurbished cottages from the early 1900s serve as accommodations. Stone benches dot the campus, offering spots for relaxation amid the serene surroundings.

The resort offers an eclectic range of activities, from art classes to zip-lining and ropes courses. With 24 miles of hiking trails, birdwatching in the tranquil hemlock forest, and guided tours revealing hidden gems, guests can choose from an array of recreational alternatives.

Adventure seekers can try escape rooms, tackle a ropes course, or test their marksmanship at the onsite shooting range, Clays at the Overlook. Additional activities near the resort include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, river-rafting, and golfing.

Although the onsite lake, Mountain Lake, was dry during our visit due to its unique periodic draining and refilling cycle, it gained fame as the location for “the lift” practice in “Dirty Dancing.” Special weekends dedicated to the film feature dance lessons, costume contests, and themed activities, attracting both first-time participants and die-hard fans.

Beyond its association with “Dirty Dancing,” Mountain Lake Lodge hosts various themed events throughout the year, ensuring a dynamic experience for visitors. Accommodations range from the historic lodge building to cottages scattered around the property, and the Harvest Dining Room, where some film scenes were shot, provides a farm-to-table culinary experience.

Nightly rates at Mountain Lake Lodge start at $199, and prices for all-inclusive “Dirty Dancing” weekends begin at $499 per person. The resort, blending history with contemporary offerings, offers a unique escape for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and a touch of Hollywood magic.
