Moving To NYC? 8 Must-Have Apps For Every New Yorker

New York City is one the most exciting cities in the world, offering the best of food, culture, and opportunities. That being said, it is also a complicated city to figure out. Even if you have lived in a big city before, understanding the City’s quirks can take at least a few years.

Thankfully, we live in a time where there is an app for everything. Whether you are permanently relocating or spending a few weeks in NYC, here are some essential apps that will make your everyday life easier.

1.Navigating the City & Figuring Out Public Transit

New York City is known for its well-connected public transit system. But even if you have had experience with public transportation, you might not be prepared for NYC subway and bus networks.

Citymapper and The New York Subway apps will be your lifesaver. Using these apps, you can easily work out your route from point A to B. You can also find detailed maps, real-time updates about departures, and other information.

Apart from subways and buses, NYC also has ferries that can take you to nearby islands at affordable prices. Download the NYC Ferry app to book tickets, view schedules, and so on.

While subways are definitely convenient, it’s not the most enjoyable way to experience the City. Biking is a great alternative, especially when the weather is beautiful. Download the CitiBike app to find the closest station and ride around the city.

2.  App for Parking and Traffic Tickets

Driving in New York is its own beast. If you have only driven on deserted suburban roads of your hometown, be ready for a rude awakening. You have to be prepared for one-way streets and people cutting in front of you without warning. It would be best to get WinIt for fighting a speeding ticket in NY and other traffic tickets.

3. Ride-Sharing Apps

At times subways are simply not the most time-efficient option. Or maybe you don’t have the energy to get on a train after a night out. Hailing a cab is an option if you have to travel a short distance. However, Uber is a cheaper alternative for longer distances. To further cut down the fare, you can get UberPool.

4. Finding a Bathroom

When we said there is an app for everything, we meant it. Nature can call anytime, and you have to answer. Whether you’re in the middle of Times Square or at Chelsea Farmers Market,  Sit, or Squat helps you quickly locate bathrooms. Apart from finding toilets, the app also differentiates between clean and dirty bathrooms for users.

5. Make Restaurant Reservations

New York is home to incredible restaurants and cafes. However, getting a table at a popular restaurant is not easy. Instead of being turned away from the door, make reservations with OpenTable.

6. Watching a Broadway Show

Whether you have lived in NYC for years or it’s your first time, watching a Broadway show is definitely on everyone’s list. If you’re not keen on standing in lines (who is?), book tickets from the comforts of your home with TKTS. This app also offers great discounts on same-day tickets.

7. Keep Up with Health & Fitness

Did you sign up for a non-refundable Yoga class only to realize it’s not right for you? Download ClassPass that will allow you to try different fitness classes in the City. This is an excellent way to keep your fitness regime interesting.

8. Stay Safe

Even though New York is a safe city, extra precautions never hurt. Download Watch Over Me, which will turn your phone into an emergency alert system. When you turn on tracking for a set time, the app sends your loved ones your exact location if you don’t tap “I’m Safe” before time runs out.

Where there is a will, there is an app. While this is not an exhaustive list, it covers some great apps for dining, commuting, eating, and exploring in New York City.
