New York City welcomed its Baby New Year at the stroke of midnight, and the newborn boy, yet to be named, made his debut in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Born at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, the baby boy entered the world weighing 7 pounds, 12.5 ounces, and measuring 21 inches.

His parents, part of a Flatbush couple, celebrated the arrival of their first child, marking the fifth consecutive year that the hospital has seen the first baby of the New Year.

Interestingly, the father of the newborn also shares a special connection with the hospital, as he was born at the same medical facility, then named NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island, 23 years ago. Adding to the serendipity, the same doctor who delivered the father was also present to deliver his son, creating a remarkable generational connection within the hospital’s birthing history.

Meanwhile, in Queens, another heartwarming arrival graced the new year. Jahsial Novoa, born at 12:08 a.m. at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, weighed 6 pounds and 1.4 ounces. The proud parents, Freddy Cortez and Merleene Novoa, expressed their joy and gratitude, describing their feelings as “blessed” and “happy.” While Jahsial may not have been the first newborn of the year, his arrival brought immense joy to his family.

Excitement reverberated in the Novoa household, with Jahsial’s older brother, 9-year-old Axel Novoa, expressing his happiness at having a little brother. The family’s elation underscored the profound joy that the arrival of a new baby brings, especially during the festive occasion of New Year’s Day.
